(34,189 posts)Before we moved into this house, I had several times when I had to use a walker, and other safety equipment. When we designed this house, we made it all wheelchair accessible, safety rails all over the place in the bathrooms, a shower where we can sit while bathing, and lots of other features that have improved our safety for our old age (we're both in our early 60s).
Another thing to do is to see if you can get some sessions with an occupational therapist. They don't so much help you work as teach you ways to manage when you are impaired. It's simple things, like how to avoid falls, safer ways to wash, dress, do everyday chores.
At the same time I was getting physical therapy after my knee replacements, I also got occupational therapy. It's helped a lot. Since then, my Dad before his death and now my Mom have had therapists come into their home to help access the safety and to advise them on ways to avoid falls.
I think it's a good idea for everyone to have at least a couple of sessions with an OT as they age as a preventative measure. I know it made me think about ways I was doing things to make life safer.
