...is a song that praises Robert E. Lee for surrendering and ENDING the Civil War and all of its destruction and killing, despite the pleas of Jefferson Davis and others at the time to keep it going. Like many of Johnny Cash's songs, it is obviously ANTI-WAR to anyone with a higher-than-room-temperature IQ.
