New York City has made it to the final round of cities under consideration as host of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic National Committee announced Monday.
The city, along with Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio, are the three finalists in the search for a home for the presidential nominating convention. Birmingham, Alabama, and Phoenix are no longer potential hosts.
"We are fortunate to have such a diverse and vibrant group of cities interested in hosting this special event and we thank Phoenix and Birmingham for showcasing their special communities," Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. "We look forward to working with Columbus, New York, and Philadelphia as we go forward."
If New York's bid is successful, the $100 million convention would be hosted for the first time at Brooklyn's Barclays Center arena. Backers of the bid have hailed Brooklyn, which is Mayor Bill de Blasio's home borough, as a Democratic bastion.

The committee said the convention would be held during one of three weeks in 2016: the weeks of July 18, July 25 or Aug. 22. Officials are expected to announce the final city and date early next year.
In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio has made a spirited case for his home borough, Brooklyn, where the convention would be held at the Barclays Center. Mr. de Blasio was planning to convene a meeting with community leaders about the citys efforts on Monday afternoon.
The bidding process has set off an occasional war of words between officials in New York and Philadelphia, where former Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania has championed that citys bid (he previously served as its mayor).
