After 9/11 the philanthropic sources that supported the publishing industry pretty much dried up, which is why/when self-publishing began to take hold. When you understand how much time/effort and your own $$ goes into publishing with publishing houses, you will understand that self-publishing is now the only way to get published unless you are a celebrity, politician, etc.
I have self-published two books, both with different self publishing companies. But, I, too will be doing more self-publishing research for my third book.
