I grew up with my mom baking it inside the bird, she still does and I love it. My wife on the other hand only makes her stuffing outside of the bird.

No because the bird cooks faster unstuffed and also for vegetarians in the family who like stuffing

You can do it safely provided you bring the stuffing itself up to a safe temperature (165F)
