(as was Linda Eastman) and he said he found it absolutely terrifying, besides which he couldn't hear a note of music.

Aside from the shrieking fans, the technology just wasn't there. There weren't even fold-back speakers so musicians could hear each other. I see those old clips and I'm amazed at how tight that band had to be just to stay in time and in tune with each other, let alone do harmonies. The best clips on YouTube are smaller gigs--Germany 1966, Australia 1964.
