Raimondo signs into law 9 measures, including bill that links state college funding to performance [View all]

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Raimondo signed 9 bills into law Thursday, including an act championed by Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed that ties funding for the state's public colleges to their performance.

The performance funding bill, a priority of Paiva Weed for the past two years, passed the General Assembly in the early morning hours of the final day of this year's legislative session after a night of protracted negotiations with the House of Representatives.

It directs the commissioner of post-secondary education to develop performance measurements for the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island that will help determine how much state funding they receive. The measurements are to include graduation rates and enrollment in high-wage fields of study.

Linking institutional funding to performance measurements has been criticized by education unions.
