I was first intrigued by the various uses of fungi when I read a beautifully written sci-fi novel called Rats Live on No Evil Star by James Audlin. The story is narrated by a fungal tree on a planet where only fungus grows. It seemed to me that a fungal monoculture is probably in our future as we make the planet less hospitable to more complex species so it's good to see fungi has so many uses.
