1. I don't think MH17 can be compared to USS Maine.

As it doesn't seem the US is itching for war against Russia or in the Ukraine. Yes, the US is supporting the facists who seized power (don't we always?), but there's no indication we're going to put planes in the air or boots on the ground.
USS Maine most comparable to 9/11. US was looking for a pretext to invade Iraq, and a terrorist attack by Saudi fundamentalists provided it.
