except whatever he thinks will get him ahead. He's an Ivy League premed major who adopted Young Earth creationism to help him get elected. He pushed for an overhaul of Louisiana's tax structure, then signed the bill to kill it after he realized how unpopular it was. Ditto for Common Core. He was one of its biggest cheerleaders, now he's trying to get out in front of the parade against it. He chased after all these companies and threw corporate welfare at them to get them to locate in Louisiana, now he's throwing them under the bus to try to appeal to social conservatives in Iowa.

He started out as a moderate-conservative, which is about as progressive as it's possible for a statewide politician in Louisiana to be in this era. Then he got presidential fever and sprinted to the right of Huckabee and Santorum. He's for Jindal first, last, and always. He's willing to burn down Louisiana in the process if it gets him ahead. In fact, that may be part of his calculation-if he brings down the wrath of progressives on the state, it will make him a martyr in the eyes of the crazy Right.
