2. I've always thought pledging allegiance to the country made more sense than

pledging allegiance to the flag. We pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth whose design has changed many times since 1776 and our national anthem is about whether the flag survived a particular battle, rather than about the country.



As an aside, I've seen Boston's Fourth of July celebration get more militaristic, more police state-ish and more nationalistic since I first moved to Boston. I preferred it as a family event where people dressed normally. The more nationalistic and militaristic a country gets, the scarier.
