(108,977 posts)Anyone who's dealt with several stitches to the face knows how bloody that would be -- and he had seven. I've brought two children to the ER for fewer stitches than that, and I wouldn't have said it was "out of precaution." What was the alternative? Staying home and watching it bleed?

Doctors don't really plan "I'm going to give this person 5 stitches"-- they start stitching and stop when the wound is closed. However many stitches it takes to properly close the wound is how many they give. The location of the cut, the depth, and the width will all affect how many stitches are given, but a good rule of thumb is about 1 stitch per cm, or 5 stiches to an inch.

How big is it? Youll want to see a doctor if the wound:
Looks very deep, even if its not especially long or wide
Is more than a half-inch long
Opens so wide that you cant get the edges together with just a little pressure
Has ragged edges
Has debris in it such as dirt, glass, or gravel
How badly is it bleeding? Youll likely need stitches if the wound:
Bleeds enough to soak through a bandage
Keeps bleeding even after you apply direct pressure for 5 to 10 minutes
Spurts blood
