Judges allows state senator to keep financial records closed

TALLAHASSEE -- A state senator's financial records will remain closed as he resolves a dispute over campaign law violations, a judge ruled Thursday.

The Florida Elections Commission asked for tax returns, bank statements, credit card bills, car titles and investment listings to examine Sen. Alex Diaz de la Portilla's finances for the last four years. The material will be used to determine how much Diaz de la Portilla should be fined for 17 campaign violations during his 1999 election.

The request also included accounts and investments he shares with his wife, Claudia Diaz de la Portilla, who has lobbied in Tallahassee for companies such as AT&T and Accenture.

Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, could be fined as much as $17,000. His income and his assets will be a factor in determining the amount.

An appeals court erased a record $311,000 fine against Diaz de la Portilla last year when it struck down all but 17 of 311 violations found by the elections commission.
