Impeachment is a defensive act. When officials in the executive or judiciary put our common contract (i.e., the Constitution of the United States of America) into breach, impeachment is the mechanism we defined to reassert the terms.

Indictment, prosecution in court, judgment, and punishment must follow, but it is through impeachment and removal that our constitutional democracy is "reborn."
