Saddam's military infrastructure was the force preventing a civil war. Remember what happened to Tito's Yugoslavia, once that totalitarian apparatus was destroyed? Iraq is replaying that same scenario, sooner or later, slower or faster, with or without our military presence.

There's just too much bad blood between the major ethnic groups, and a lot more will be spilled before a central government can re-emerge to govern what's left of Iraq. It's possible that some kind of 3-state system could evolve, but then there's the problem of what Turkey and Iran will allow on their borders.

Subjugation by a strongman may be one of the few viable "solutions".
