There was a minor diplomatic flap last election when our ambassador to the US, Raymond Chrétien, made a statement in support of Al Gore during the election.
I remember the fuss it caused here at home as well. There was talk of an inquiry and the ambassador was warned.
That's why countries don't want to publicly support anyone in a foreign election. It gives the appearance of meddling and if the un-favored candidate gets in, there is the possibilty of chilly relationships or outright retaliation, as in the BFEE's case. Our relationship with the US (officially) is the worst it's been since the Nixon/Trudeau years.
