Our View: Enough already, Sen. Craig; it's time for you to go

- Idaho Statesman
Edition Date: 09/27/07

Larry Craig appears determined to use Idaho's U.S. Senate seat as a pawn in his public relations campaign.

It's embarrassing. It's unseemly. It's gone on long enough. Craig would best serve his reputation, and his state, by honoring his carefully minced intent to resign from the Senate at the end of the month.

Don't hold your breath, though. "For now, I will continue my work in the U.S. Senate for Idaho," Craig said Wednesday afternoon, after Hennepin County, Minn., District Judge Charles A. Porter said he would take a week or more to review the senior senator's guilty plea in a disorderly conduct case.
.........

It is about having a senator who can serve Idaho on Capitol Hill, without distraction. Even if Craig gets his legal do-over, he could be back in court facing a pair of charges — disorderly conduct and interference with privacy, effectively a charge of peeping. Even if the Craig team wins the first round, a daunting legal battle awaits. In announcing on Sept. 1 his intent to resign, Craig as much as conceded this point: "To pursue my legal options as I continue to serve Idaho would be an unwanted and unfair distraction of my job and for my Senate colleagues."
