He said she got away with murder. The accident, (And it was an accident.) was in 1963, so she she got away with it in 1963.

I am guessing that he thought that she was a Rep at the time and used political connections to escape.

The fact is that her parents were Democrats (At the time Texas was solid Democrat.)and they were not politically prominent. It was an accident by a careless 17 year old driver.

If you have had a teenage child, then you have probably been nervous during the years they were learning to drive. My own daughter, now an adult, had an accident when she ran a stop sign. We were lucky and it was just a fender bender, but that was just luck that it was so light. Do you propose crucifying her? She did the same thing Laura did, but was luckier.

Please note that my post concerns only the accident. What she has done later after marrying W is a different matter.
