The hero-worship Evan Thomas is using describes many a hubris inflated cabinet level idiot hired by Presidents. This would be McNamara who came from GM and got into the Viet Nam debacle with no brain and both feet. Perhaps this refers to William Casey. Or perhaps that General Haig guy who claimed he was in charge after Reagan was shot bypassing the constitutional succesion. So many more, so little time!
