NBC 'exclusive' on Iraqi judge assassination completely false

What do you get when you cross a factually accurate NBC News Exclusive report with a factually inaccurate NBC News Exclusive report? Nothing, Franklin, because there was no factually accurate NBC News Exclusive report to begin with. TVNewser is hot on the trail of Brian Williams & Co.'s statement at the top of last night's evening news: "There is word from Baghdad this evening -- confirmed by NBC News -- that the presiding judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein has been assassinated."

Except, well, he wasn't. The judge who was killed was one of 50 judges involved in trying former Baathists, but that wasn't made apparent until after 7pm, when Nightly News viewers likely tuned out.
The revelation of the actual victim doesn't make the loss of life any less severe - but it sure gives us actual reason to disbelieve that smug Brian Williams. All along we'd been doing it on speculation.
