and they know it, no matter how much they try to pass credit to his predecessor or other circumstances.

Another thing they disliked was that he wasn't a "blueblood" like the Bushes. He really was the closest thing to a self-made man, rising from almost nothing to become president. He reporesented the American dream that they didn't dare to aspire to. You'd think they'd appreciate that if they are middle class, but some people want aristocracy to rule.
