Pick up some recreational astronomy, homebrewing, etc.

Pick a hobby that is not too expensive, not particularly dangerous, likely to appeal to both sexes, and interesting to you. Preferably, it will also be something not too common, and one for which you can find a large local club (There's homebrew clubs and astronomy clubs everywhere).

Learn all about it. That way, when you meet new people you have something interesting to talk about other than your job, or politics.

You also have built-in excuses for a first date (a brew-in, a star party, etc).

Even if you don't meet available members of the opposite sex directly, you will be making lots of friends, combatting boredom and loneliness, and these new friends might be able to fix you up with their own friends.

Don't knock blind dates... such introductions arranged by mutual friends can be very useful.
