a real wage. Of course, we'd pay more for food. Which is a good thing, actually, since restaurant food is usually not the healthiest.

But cripes: have you ever worked in a restaurant? I worked my sorry ass off and I was STILL a lousy waitress. The even moderately friendly ones deserve a massive tip in my book. Many many people are godawfully rude, and it takes a LOT to put a smile or even a neutral expression your face when serving them. Customers' rudeness would shock you if you've never done it before. I guess it's because they're hungry, and maybe not used to bossing others around.

I remember one of my fellow waitresses -- and she was good at it -- saying that waitressing had destroyed her ability to like people.
