I'm currently writing a book and writing for a sitcom parody on a cable access TV station (hey, you've got to start somewhere). I've found that there's something about the night that just inspires the brain. I think it might have something to do with everyone else in your immediate area being sound asleep and freeing up the psychic highway (or something like that). So, as such, I tend to stay up until 6 AM and then go to bed, college classes permitting.

Maybe insomnia isn't so much not being able to sleep but more of your brain wanting to be awake.
