7. You're forgetting one thing
Gun rights. Rural voters (and southern rural voters too) care more about guns than they care about what gay people do. They also respect honesty and bluntness. Bush has messed things up so badly that even those voters you're talking about will think twice before voting for Bush. But if they don't trust the other candidate on guns, they would vote for Bush. I think Dean will be the most competitive in the south because of his state's rights position on gun control. The south is big on state's rights. I don't think it's "being from the north" that turns southern voters off. I think it's the "I know what's best for you" attitude that many politicians from the north exhibit. Dean listens, and won't just assume he can't compete in the south. I think the south will like most of his positions, and like him overall as a candidate if they get to see him. He won't neglect the south, and that neglect is the biggest problem Democrats have there. Being a doctor helps, too, although I'm so thankful he doesn't harp on that like other candidates harp on what they've done in the past. I am SO sick of hearing about Vietnam, the mill and what candidates' parents did. No one gives a flying f**k what they did decades and decades ago. They care about what they are going to do to fix the mess we're in.
