that the masses will get behind anyone that tickles the right spot? I believe the unthinking masses followed Reagan and it was those unthinking masses that we could not sway to our side against Bush in 2004.

Just because a candidate wins, does not mean that they are the best candidate. It is not football. Sometimes the best ones lose and lose big.

There is a legitimate argument for one who believes that a candidate will do more harm than good for our party and nation to not vote for that candidate.

It is childish (but human) to not vote because you want to punish those that beat you and rubbed it in...but it is just as childish to accuse everyone who does not agree with you of being childish. It is very immature thinking to come to the conclusion that there is only one way (yours.)
Life is way too complex for that to be true.
