Party registration is hardly the same as Party ID in North Carolina. In the 2004 election, Party ID in North Carolina was 39% Democrat, 40% Republican, even though the registration figures indicated 12.1% more Democrats than Republicans. This year our edge is up to 13% in registrations, nice but not an overwhelming pickup from 2004. Per usual, the Republicans quietly gained in net registrations from 2004 until 2008, then we swamped them in calendar year 2008.
As Zynx indicated, no doubt Obama is ahead in North Carolina, and significantly, but the margin is overstated by those who rely on registration figures. That state is going to be tight.
