I think most people have lost the perspective they had before WMD became the new catchphrase. Saddam was cleaning up his act. He was ready to start trading openly with the rest of the world.

If you think about it, he seemed very willing to let the inspectors. "C'mon, I've got nothing to hide." When those UN sanctions would have been lifted, and Iraqi oil traded in Euros, you better believe that American oil companies would have been shitting themselves.

That was a major rationale for the war--a backroom, neocon justification for sure. All they had to do was sell the American people the WMD business (c/o Wolfowitz), and they were successful.

Be pragmatic, though. Kerry couldn't go on television tonight and tell an entire country they were misled. I have a feeling Americans don't like being told they're stupid. It will take time for this to come out. If it's any consolation, the many bush flip-flops on the war will make a good sequence for a history channel special in a few years.
