Shrum and Cahill were assuming that the press would do some fact checking on the issue. Not surprisingly, that didn't happen because the press was waiting for Kerry to issue a sound bite. Later we learned that Kerry wanted to respond directly but he was advised against doing so. Outside of a few op-ed pieces on Kerry's side from people who really knew what happened, it seems the only major piece of fact checking came from "Nightline." This "Nightline" piece got little, if any, air time after its initial broadcast, and it was far too late to make a difference anyway.

I'll never understand why the Kerry campaign didn't wise up and respond after the first few days. Shrum and Cahill should have been well aware that the contemporary TV media doesn't act as a filter for the truth, they just air "both sides" and let the idiot masses decide who they want to believe. Without Kerry talking, the only side being represented was the one of the Swift Boat F--ks.
