Granholm, DeVos ready to spend millions

LANSING -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm far outpaced likely GOP challenger Dick DeVos in 2005 fund-raising efforts, but DeVos' campaign finance report shows he has deep personal resources from which to draw in the months ahead.

Granholm's campaign raised $4.96 million in 2005, according to campaign spokesman Chris DeWitt, and had more than $5.1 million in the bank. The campaign missed the 5 p.m. Tuesday filing deadline because of technical problems. DeWitt said the report would be filed this morning.

The DeVos campaign collected $1.84 million in direct contributions, more than $776,000 from the candidate himself. In addition, DeVos and his wife, Betsy, made about $73,000 in in-kind contributions. As of Dec. 31, DeVos had $369,000 cash on hand.>snip

DeWitt said the extent of DeVos' personal contributions suggest that it's "just the start of his attempt to buy the election." He once again called on DeVos to release his income tax returns. DeVos said that when appropriate, he would release personal financial information he considers relevant.>more
