And I suppose movies.

Many reality shows depict all human relationships gay or straight as using other people for sex, money or power.

Also, it's hard to know anymore what is more hideous, movie's with gruesome violence or the news with real life gruesome violence.

Perhaps, that is why people cling to religion, and I don't mean cling as in "clingy" but as in a lifeline, to hold back chaos and evil.

I agree with that, the only difference that I see is that I would hope that ones moral compass comes from within, based on understanding and reason, as opposed to external ideas that impose short cuts to morality such as: if you do such and such you are going to hell. It's too easy to control people with the latter.
