i remember a gay activist interviewed by, was it Maddow? Harrison on the Edge?, who was a complete Debbie Downer. the activist was furious with the new generation of young queer youth, considering them complacent, ignorant, and unappreciative of the work done before. he was not very hopeful. he said he expected a step backwards, or more, before people really realize that these things could be lost if vigilance becomes this lax.

seeing the energy this event galvanized, it seems like a bit of retributive karma for the utter complacency and blase' attitude of communities all around, but particularly in CA political parties and organizations. expecting to 'get by' on reputation and 'just enough' doesn't cut it; remaining active and caring is the way to make change and keep progress. organize, organize, organize -- agitate, agitate, agitate. eventually this too shall pass, but it definitely seems expected for the abysmal state of organization in politically neglected CA. perhaps this is the crisis needed to truly wake people up and let light shine away encroaching darkness? we'll see...
