3. And another problem is...
how much can we mentally handle?

Andrew Weil in one of his books suggests a "news fast" as a way to reduce stress. Of course, for news junkies (like me) this would be cold turkey and awful. But it is a problem, I think. We are fragmented in so many ways with so many events, disasters, stories, anecdotes, opinions... it makes our heads very noisy and desensitizes us. And then there is what I call the "world guilt quotient." It is hard not to feel personally responsible for everything. But probably not a good thing to do.

I am my brother's keeper...but am I also his keeper if he lives on the other side of the world? I haven't solved that yet.

I think I skewed quite a bit from your original post, which was basically whom to trust. I trust no one. I read it all. I don't trust everything even on DU. I read it all and watch it all and make my decisions. EVERYBODY has an agenda. There is no purity in news reporting. The only way we can really know is to be there ourselves.
