Senate Democrats are asking for a postponement in the August congressional recess to allow for an extended debate over the Iraq.

Their request comes although the House and Senate had extended debates in June on Iraq policy, voting in favor of resolutions that support the Bush administration’s policy on Iraq policy and ended up voting to support the Bush administration’s current plan. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Monday that isn’t good enough.

Reid is asking for a second chance for Congress to consider a Democrat-sponsored resolution calling for withdrawal of troops to begin before the end of the year.

“Our plan would have given the Iraqi people their best chance for success, while also giving America the best chance to confront the growing threats of North Korea, Iran and terrorism,” he said, suggesting it is, essentially, what U.S. commanders in Iraq have proposed.
