what about less frequented airports where they don't have flights every hour?

Or people choose their flight time by their schedule, not other protocols.

Besides, the airlines don't do the screening, it is done in one general area for the whole airport (or terminal) for flight leaving at a variety of times - how would they separate the people leaving on odd and even flights?

Of course, I see your point - and it has some merit - take a free market individualistic approach to the issue. But, why not turn the security over to the airlines? The airline has some control over the gate, they could implement more strict security measures if they so chose. The downside is the additional cost, delayed flights and inconvenience to their passengers. The upside is possibly better security. Let the airlines decide and the free market sort it out. Of course, this still only works in areas where there is choice in carriers.
