Live. On the air. CNN "broke" the story based on the report of a family member. They'd heard the cheering in the church and the bells ringing and a family member told Mr. Cooper the "good news." Hell, family members later told Mr. Cooper that a representative of the mining company told them that the miners would be coming to the church to meet with their loved ones!

They should have used more caution, granted, but when you have the images CNN had and many family members were saying what they were saying, it was hard to ignore the story.
