Trying to do the dignified thing and ignore them, as John Kerry did with the Swiftboaters, caused him to be vilified for not fighting back soon enough. When the Edwardses take the opposite approach and respond to the invective, they're called out for not ignoring it. What's a candidate to do?

I agree, the media is very much to blame for this kind of ugliness.
