President Puts Terror Detainees Under Geneva Convention [View All]

Washington, D.C.(AHN)--Long criticized by human rights observers for his policy on the treatment of terror suspects, President Bush on Friday ordered the CIA to comply with the Geneva Conventions against enemy torture.

The five-page executive order came Friday after more than five years after the president exempted members of al-Qaida and the Taliban from the international accord's provisions.

Under Friday's five-page order, the CIA must comply with Common Article 3, which prohibits "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."

While intelligence officials remain reticent on the specific interrogation techniques employed by the spy agency, the Associated Press reports that the agency's methods are believed to have included sleep deprivation and disorientation, exposing prisoners to uncomfortable cold or heat for long periods, stress positions and the simulated drowning technique known as water-boarding.

I gotta say this headline really bothers me. Since when does Bush have the right to decide whether we torture or not? The Geneva Conventions decide that!
