What they do is, when you're waiting in line, they bring a manager over with the scanner to scan your goods and your card (which they'll always do when they're backed up). After scanning, you'll hear a pitch that begins with "I've noticed you still have a card. I guarantee there's either a spiff for every upgrade or some type of contest (or both).

Sams has a similar deal where the upgraded membership also gets you a slew of discounts on things you may or may not ever use.
