on Limbaugh took place. I was on rightwing boards being attacked and called 'traitor' etc. I was thrilled when Daschle spoke out about it on the Senate floor, foolishly unaware at the time of how powerful the Rightwing Noise Machine had become. It was crushing to see Daschle's attempt to draw attention to the violence inducing hate radio hosts, turned into mockery against Democrats who were portrayed as 'whining' and not understanding Limbaugh's 'humor'.

But most of all, NOT ONE OF THEM pointed out that while Daschle was an Air Force veteran, Limbaugh was a draft-dodging coward.

And Democrats also backed away from supporting Daschle, fearful of inciting Limbaugh's rath against them too. I can hardly blame now, considering the atmosphere in the country at the time.

But it was the duty of the press to cover that story fairly, and as you can see from the excerpts in the OP, Howard Kurtz and Brokaw, and Tim Russert, made light of it all.
