but you put books or pictures or tchotchkes on them and then yelled at the cats for climbing on them, I guess that'd be OK with him?

It's just the *stated purpose* of it that offends him, the idea of someone making things for their pets to enjoy. Never mind that of course it's also for the benefit of humans because people like watching their pets play!
