Pinochet and his allies were heavily influenced by the Chicago School of economics (Milton Friedman's worship of "market forces"), since the Ford Foundation had subsidized the training of Latin American economists at the University of Chicago. Milton Friedman even flew down to Chile to consult with the Pinochet government.

The result was millions of Chileans falling into poverty in what was once one of the most prosperous countries in South America.
