Reagan ushered in the era of Grover Norquist and the "starve the beast" people.

People started to say shit in public that - prior to the election of that Presidential Vegetable- they would only have said to their drinking buddies.

It's gone downhill from there.

Look at the graphs! Real wages started down, manufacturing down, taxes on the rich down, concentration of wealth up...

The US started turning to shit in 1980, and it's been a long slide into the septic tank of history since then.
