9. He's not stupid or naive....
I think it's a combination of being savvy enough to know where the money is to be had and playing to that side of things, and also being far too enamored of his own legacy and skills and more concerned with whether he's being portrayed as some shining knight of bipartisanship. He's too concerned with things being "Grand" and "Historic" and more concerned with what the Grand Dames of the beltway media think of him and say about him and less about what is actually good for the country.

Why someone in his position would not have pointed out 10 million times already "THESE SAME PEOPLE VOTED TO RAISE THE DEBT LIMIT ANY NUMBER OF TIMES UNDER MY PREDECESSORS. WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN NOW DO THEY HAVE AN ISSUE WITH IT?!?!?!?"

Why someone in his position would not have pointed out 10 million times already "MY OPPONENTS REFUSE TO RAISE TAXES ON MILLIONAIRES AND INSIST ON CUTTING SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE AND MEDICAID!!!!!!"

Instead he lauds their patriotism and praises how much they love their country and then turns around and scolds democrats and progressives.
