A few things they could have done at some point along the way when they had the power:

1. Gotten the big money out of politics using the legislative process.
2. Prevented a lot of the grotesque wealth inequality by limiting top pay to a fair multiple of bottom pay as Japan has done in the past. If the CEO is only allowed to make 20 times more than the lowest paid worker then they're not going to move all those jobs offshore to exploit the cheap labor.
3. Looked around the world at other models for health care and adopted the best ideas to create a sensible universal single-payer system for the U.S.
