37. this is why republicans will lose
if they nominate a nutcase social conservative rightie, they lose moderates - and if they put a nutcase social conservative rightie in the v.p. slot to appease the right-wing extremists, they will lose moderates.

with the extremists coming out this strongly against the most-likely-to-be nominated candidate, they'll suppress republican votes. of course, they're trying to make it more difficult for democratic-leaning factions to vote, but they are going up against people who are more likely to pay attention to politics anyway.

it seems to me that President Obama might be smart to appeal to those who might be dissuaded from going to the polls by paying attention to some of the issues from the base - b/c OWS and polls concerning this issue show that the majority of Americans are not what is now considered "moderate" on a host of issues.

which means "moderate" is the not-nutty right, in terms of how far to the right a national candidate can be to motivate people to go vote, it would seem to me. this doesn't apply for House pols b/c gerrymandering has created so many openings for the nutcases - and we see the legislation they are focusing on, the social engineering they are trying to force on the American people, is also the minority position, nationally.

Or at least that's how it looks to me at this time.
