Schwarzenegger more unpopular than ever, poll finds
Schwarzenegger more unpopular than ever, poll finds
Thu Jul 21, 2005 3:17 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's approval rating dropped to a new low even before a controversy developed about his hefty side income from fitness magazines, according to a poll released on Thursday.

Only 34 percent of adult Californians approve of the job Schwarzenegger is doing as governor, compared with 51 percent who disapprove, according to a survey by the Public Policy Institute of California.

1. I demand a recall! And ya know what? I think he would be booted out!
I really do! I don't know anyone who likes him or supports him. Most interesting is to talk to some of the workers/contractors at my house doing some work on the remodel and asking them about Bush as well as Ahnuld....they hate both of them, and they all had voted for Ahnuld...not the next time.....

3. The only reason I could think of for him to be elected
in the first place, was some mass insanity experienced by large numbers of Californians. The insanity has worn off, and people see that he is exactly what he appears to be on the screen...a muscle bound moron with no intelligence, able to win only by beating the opponent into submission by using his steroid enhanced muscles.

Reagan was bad enough; Ahnuld makes me want to tell people I'm Canadian, but my Texas accent gives me away. Texas is no better, by the way...we have way more than our share of lunatic politicians to ruin our state. Just look at Rick Perry, our governor, and never forget that Tom Delay is from Texas.

Maybe our madness stems from the massive amounts of pollution put out by our petro-chemical complexes. Whatever the reason, our suffering goes on every day the conservatives are in power.

33. I live in CA and did not vote for the recall or Arnold, but I think the
problem was Gray Davis - he really wasn't a good governor. As a matter of fact I'd have to go back quite a few years to find a good CA governor. I'd vote to recall Arnold in a minute; we could spend the 80 million he's spending on his stupid special election. Maybe next time we'll get it right. When Richard Riordan was in the race and was not voted in to run in the primaries, I told a Repug neighbor that if they had run him I would have voted for him. They said yea, but Davis ran a smear campaign on him so he lost. I told her "Davis isn't the stupid Republicans who didn't vote for him". well, she hasn't spoken to me since. The truth hurts.

77. I agree with you the Republicans ran a smear campaign on their own
candidate. But like you said Davis wasn't a very good governor I don't care if he was a Democrat. But I think Jerry Brown was one of the most forward thinking governors we ever had. His ideas about solar power and other alternative energy programs would have served us well instead of the state being raped by Enron. Remember they used to call him Governor "Moonbeam"?

14. Insanity had nothing to do with it.
Voting machines had nothing to do with it (this is getting to be an awfully convenient excuse). Too many Californians, as too many Americans, are too stupid and too lazy to do their homework. They let Rush, Hannity, the MSM, ad nauseum, do their thinking for them. They voted for the movie star and didn't give a rat's ass WHO put him in office or WHY they put him in office.

Marx was wrong. Religion is not the opiate of the masses, pop culture is.

have the terminator in office. What a hoot. :sarcasm: Too many think governing is easy and that you don't need intelligence, compassion, empathy, and experience. Too many thought it was OK that Arnie had no answers during the election he just used lines from movies and photo ops. Too many thought that everything was going to be fine because he's not a career politician and not tied to one party and corporate interests. If anyone had actually gone beyond the sound bytes and read a few articles they would know the public movie star persona doesn't match the real man.

One of the most insightful statements made on DU. I couldn't agree more. Pop culture is the driving, yet subtle force that keeps us all ignorant and complacent. Only when we see what pop culture truly is, a tool for selling which in and of itself makes it a controlling device, do we began to understand why we are in our current situation.

Thank you for this comment.

87. Well a moments reflection here...
Religion is being used to manipulate a whole huge chunk of society. Pop culture is being used to augment religion and to catch the irreligious. In fact, there is a continuum of mind control and manipulation that starts from traditional religion and seamlessly blends through the mass media all the way over to MTV, reality TV, and the world of Paris Hilton.

Augment, not replace. Marx had no concept of mass media outside of newspapers and public speakers. Madison avenue and Goebbels invented the world we live in today.

Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 07:33 PM by Stevepol
despite his present low approval rating, Ahnold would win again and by approximately the same margin of victory probably. It's not hard to write a program to shift votes around to fit whatever margins are desired.

Eventually, people are going to have to realize that these voting machines do just what they are supposed to do: they act just as they are programmed or patched to act by their programmers, i.e., Diebold, ES&S, etc.

Read up on it. People are the same mixed lot they always have been, some morons, some geniuses. That's true everywhere, Lower Slobovia or Fresno.

19. I tink we'ah going to fix Callyfoaneeya... And dat's really Fantastic !
Our biggest blue state electing a Republican wouldn't bother me so much if he's just run on policy specifics. But he specifically went out of his way to avoid substance in the election--like a typical con artist. The problem with acting like that, playing George Babbitt in a George Bailey mask, is that he ends up without any real support, or clue, for accomplishing his agenda.

But of course that's the beauty of democracy... it's self correcting. Dishonesty and (in Schwarzenneggar's case) being disingenuous always gets your ass kicked in the end. If you don't mind learning the same lessons over and over again, it's quite an efficient system.

he won with LESS than that percentage of voters.. according to what I understand he won with only about 11% of the total (repugs can't win if they don't cheat) state voting for him as the ballot was split 50 ways with everyone in SoCal being on the ticket..

Except of course for Gray Davis, I never understood by Davis wasn't allowed to be on the Ticket along with everyone else - oh yeah, THAT would have been FAIR, and we can't have that..

but I bet Davis would have won :)

I'm not sure what the number was, but it was close to or over 50%. A lot of people were speculating that it could have been as low as 11%, but it was not.

I don't think that'll be happening again. (in fact if his numbers don't improve dramatically I'm willing to bet he won't run again and will pretend he has a good excuse for it. - hopefully that means Arianna Huffington will give it another go!)

17. I've only lived in CA for 2 years
but I don't like the initiative system that this state has.

The way Arnold got to be governor is that Issa paid millions of dollars to poor people without jobs to collect signatures so that we could have a SPECIAL election to recall Davis and get someone else.

So in effect after Davis raised millions of dollars to win the governor's race in a fair election, he had to face the voters again in the middle of his term. He didn't have the money to run ads saying that the state's economic problems were due to the Republicans in the White House stealing our state's money through the Enron scam.

Now we are facing another $70 to $80 million dollar SPECIAL election as Arnold and the corporations attempt to get us voters to have judges rather than our elected representatives draw the boundaries of our districts for Congress. That's less democracy, not more. And it's an obvious attempt to get more Repubs in Congress just the way Texas did. I personally spoke to people who were collecting signatures for this theft of our taxpayer money and they were just collecting signatures to make a little money themselves.

So, what it boils down to is this: corporations and the Repub party know that they can go around the California legislature because they can afford to pay people to collect signatures. And they can afford the advertising campaigns to get people to go along with their corporate greed initiatives.

Meanwhile ordinary people like me don't have the money to fight back.

It's a shame Republicans spend so much energy trying to think of ways to circumvent traditional, respectable political structure in order to grab more power.

They simply aren't wise and good enough to handle more power well. It's always a disaster when they gain the upper hand.

22. Aaaahnold and Smirk are serious lessons - - to us as well as the GOP
Aahnold and Smirk both came to office with little or no record, and the folks that voted for them voted for pleasing media images. Part of that image was how effective they would be in office, fixing very real, very serious problems. But a bigger part was an implied promises to be politically and ethically pure.

One of the reasons that these guys got as many votes as they did was that they had little or no record for people to compare to these fantasies - - and the media ignored their lack of record - - and/or told us that their inexperience was a virtue.

Once the voters got a look at what Aahnold really was - - just another dirty pol, and an inept one at that - - his numbers tanked. In case anyone has forgotten, before 9/11 Smirk's poll numbers tanked in a similar fashion.

But we shouldn't smugly decide that conservatives and Republicans are the only ones who will fall for this trap. We are equally vulernable to pleasing bs from fresh faces.

(snip)
The percentage of people saying they would be "inclined" to vote for Arnold in 2006 has plummetted by 17 points since February.

Vote inclination to re-elect Gov. Schwarzenegger to a second term in November 2006:

Inclined - 39% (56%)
Not inclined - 57% (42%)

There's really no good news for Arnold here. 83% of Democrats and 61% of independents oppose Arnold. Only 71% of Republicans say they'd vote for him - compare that to the 80%-90% Republican loyalty George W. Bush racks up in polls. Along the same lines, 88% of liberals and 60% of moderates say they're disinclined to support Arnold - along with 30% of conservatives. Only 65% of conservatives support him.

Also, there's an immense gender gap. While both men and women say they'd vote against Arnold, men oppose him by 51-46. Women oppose him by 63-33.

29. I was living in CA when Davis got recalled and Arnold got elected.
The pop culture reference is definitely on the mark. Arnold got elected
even though most people did not even know what his stance on issues were. They voted for him because they never disassociated his screen image from whatever political identity he had. Davis looked like the 90 pound weakling and Arnold was going to "kick ass" and be another "anti-politician". Of course, when he derided special interests he only mentioned labor unions and Indian casino's. Very few people bothered to notice his cosy ties with Enron and the large corporate donors. Just like Iraq, the truth was out there for those who bothered to do the least bit of investigation. The Repubs love politicians with pop culture images and market them like the corporate whores they are-and the public,e.g. Californians, buy it like they would the latest product
that makes them feel good about themselves. Californians now will have to go through another costly special election which nobody really wants and which is backed by a governor who is unpopular.

Michael Hiltzik, in a great http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2005_07/006767.php">post, gives voice to the emerging CW that Arnold's ready to quit, that he'll take 2006 as an opportunity to turn it over to another. It's very possible. The spectacle of Arnold Schwarzenegger losing to the bespectacled, geeky Greek treasurer won't do his image any favors and I wouldn't be surprised if he declared victory and returned, faux-triumphant, to the movies. It'll really depend on the success of his ballot initiatives this Fall. Republicans know that but, more to the point, Democrats know it. If these get rejected, Arnold's a lame duck.

43. Why is it that, when Bushites steal elections, some people always jump
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 01:33 PM by Peace Patriot
on the voters, or Americans in general, as stupid, clueless, uncaring, etc., etc.? Why make that assumption, right off the bat? Why not give some attention to the actual mechanisms by which unpopular Bushites with extremist minority views gain their power (i.e., the election system itself, for instance), and to what these supposed "stupid" voters actually believe?

I think we underestimate just how important it is to the Corporate Rulers and War Profiteers that majorities in American elections do not win. Our vote is an extremely important power--it is a power that, when used collectively, has the potential to regulate Corporations, and to significantly curb their activities, including the RIGHT to de-charter them and dismantle them. We, the people, are the sovereign power in the U.S.--or so our founders said. The war, and exploitation, and environmental destruction that is occurring in the world is mostly emanating from our shores, driven by Corporations whom we have the inherent right to control.

Ergo, Americans are more propagandized, and more disinformed, than any other people on earth. And with all this, still...STILL, 58% of Americans opposed the war in Iraq BEFORE the invasion. I will never forget that stat. And, if you look at ALL the polls over the last year or so, what do you find? Americans disapprove of every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range. Iraq. Social Security. The deficit. Torturing prisoners. You name it. And that is not even to mention Bush's current 42% approval rating--or the utterly dismal and unprecedented 49% on the very day of his inauguration.

So, Americans are not so stupid. I think what Americans are, for the most part, is DISENFRANCHISED.

I am familiar with all of the election 2004 evidence, and I know that that election was stolen. (WHERE is Bush's support NOW? Where are the voters of Karl Rove's "invisible" get out the vote campaign? WHERE ARE THEY?) (Sorry to shout, but I think the evidence is SCREAMING at us.)

Anyway, I think 2004 was just outright stolen--by Diebold and ES&S, the two rightwing companies and major Bush supporters who own and control the vote tabulation with SECRET PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE. I think Ohio was added in (Rove Plan B)--overt suppression of Dem voters; massive violations of the Voting Rights Act--because Kerry's win was bigger than expected (approx. 10% margin.) (Plan C--phony "terrorist alerts"--which was well set up in "the news" prior to the election--wasn't needed, except in Warren County, Ohio, where a phony "terrorist alert" was used to eject all observers from the vote count.)

The Schwarzenegger coup was a bit more complicated. The key, I think, is to be found in our loss of Dem Sec of State Kevin Shelley, who was driven from office on trumped up charges after suing Dieobld for their lies about the security of their machines, and decertifying their touchscreens (election theft machines) prior to the 2004 election. He also provided Californians with a paper ballot option. (And, among other reforms, forbade "revolving door" employment in his office--one of the ways that Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia have corrupted our election system.)

One of the key things that was happening when Shelley was destroyed is that he had demanded to review Diebold's source code, via his lawsuit against them. (We don't have that right--to review their code--as per contract between the state and these private companies--you know that, don't you? Not even our Sec of State!)

Schwarzenegger now has his own lapdog appointee as Sec of State (Bruce McPherson), who will most certainly respect the "trade secrets" of the Bushite election machine companies who own our election system.

Back up to 2003. Shelley had just been elected, and had not had much time to figure out what was going on with California's election system. Bang, he's hit with an unusual Recall election. His predecessor, Repub Bill Jones, and Jones' chief aide, Alfie Charles--both now working for Sequoia--had authorized Sequoia and other electronic voting in Calif. Electronic voting was very new--full of bugs (still is)--and scandalously insecure and unreliable. Shelley simply did not have time to fully understand or do anything about these problems before the Recall vote.

The Recall election was extremely odd. The election period was extraordinarily short. There was no primary, in which party voters and citizens in general got to vet the candidates. There were 125 candidates on the ballot! Time magazine and Larry King jumped in, and gave Schwarzenegger--already trading on his acting fame alone--millions and millions of dollars in free publicity (Time put him on the cover, for godssakes, just before the election!). And Cruz Bustamante, whom voters had chosen as Lt. Gov. in the normal election (the one Gray Davis and Bustamante had just won), was put in the awkward position of having to rule about his own status. (If Davis lost the Recall, shouldn't the Lt. Gov. succeed him? --I sure thought he should. THAT'S WHY I HAD VOTED FOR HIM. THAT'S his JOB--to step in, if something happens to the Gov.)

So, the Democratic leadership was just flummoxed. They should never have permitted that Recall to occur. It was an extremely manipulated and wrongful event. And Shelley had had barely enough time to find out where the pencil sharpener was--let alone ride herd on all the new electronic systems, and all the unusual decisions and circumstances.

With 125 candidates on the ballot, it would take only a programming kindergartner to shave votes to Schwarzenegger in whatever amounts he needed. Further, the short campaign prevented the public from finding out about Schwarzenegger's meeting with Ken Lay of Enron and other Bushites in Los Angeles in May 2001. Investigative reporter Greg Palast, who found out about that meeting, believes that the Recall was cooked up there--to stop Bustamante and Davis from recovering the $9 billion that Enron/Lay had stolen from Calif. If voters had known about the Schwarz/Enron connection--or even if they had been generally aware of the Enron theft--they would have been far less likely to blame Davis for the budget problems.

The news monopolies, of course, provided no help to the voters at all. And in that situation, with word of mouth and alternative news as the only vehicles for the truth, it takes TIME for the truth to get around. And, in the Recall election, there was no time.

So, I believe that the Recall was a test-run of the election theft machines, combined with a poorly informed electorate. (--whereas I believe that 2004 was a straight-up election theft, with the voters determined to oust the Bush Cartel).

Fast-forward: Shelly is now gone, and California has NO PROTECTION against Bushite ownership of our election system. Like the U.S. as a whole, we are in a very serious situation here, with Schwarz about to rig a second special election and destroy the big Democratic majority in the state with redistricting.

And here is yet another problem--possibly the worst: We have BI-PARTISAN corruption in the electronic elections business. And it IS a business now--a big business, involving lots of money. Elections are not a public matter any more. They are run by BUSHITE CORPORATIONS (who WON'T TELL US what's in their SECRET programming code!)

We have elections officials, both Dem and Repub, at the local level who are much too entangled with the private election machine business, if not outright corrupt. Check out this hogfest at the Beverly Hilton, planned for this August--a week of fun and sun for election officials from around the country, sponsored by Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia. It will burn your eyeballs!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x380340

One of the featured speakers at this event is L.A. county elections head Connie McCormack, a Democrat, and an advocate of paperless voting and Diebold, whose best friend Deborah Siler is the former chief Diebold salesperson in Calif. (--now asst. registrar in Solano County). McCormack was THE leader of the campaign to destroy Kevin Shelley.

Lavish lobbying. Future jobs offers. The heady power of controlling huge amounts of money in big business deals over electronic voting systems (systems that are endlessly costly to the taxpayers, because of continuing servicing and upgrading needs) And the heady power of being "the expert" and "the professional" who knows all the gobble-de-gook of electronic voting--versus the peon voters who don't have a clue how their votes are counted any more. (McCormack had the nerve to sneer at electronics specialist Kim Alexander, a voter advocate--"she's not a professional.")

McCormack led other county election officials in FIGHTING Shelley's reforms. It is the Sec of State's job to ride herd on these officials--ESPECIALLY with these new electronic systems--and to insure the integrity of the vote, and they fought him every way they could. McCormack told a legislative committee she wanted to "bulldoze" the Sec of State's office to get the touchscreens approved. He was holding up fed money--to pressure them to comply with security and auditing requirements.

I won't go into the details of how the SF Chronicle and other news monopolies drove Shelly from office. It's one of these Bushite-type black ops/secret dossier tales--murky, opaque, weird--where you can't figure out where things are coming from, and the story just doesn't add up. Shelly "misusing" fed election funds? No way! The witchhunt against Shelley stank to high heaven; Shelley did nothing wrong, and had no money--no legal fund--to defend himself with. Tells you something about Shelley--one of the last honest elections officials we will ever see in the U.S. of A.

There were anomalies in the 2004 election pointing to corruption and election fraud in Republican counties in Calif. Kerry won the state by a 10% margin, Barbara Boxer by a 20% margin. That might not be so unusual, except that Boxer's margin vis a vis Kerry all came in the most rightwing counties in the state--meaning that a whole bunch of people voted for Boxer...and Bush!? And only in Repub counties. I think about 3% to 5% of the Kerry vote was stolen in Calif's Repub counties, to pad Bush's wholly manufactured national popular majority.

But, to me, that is a given these days: Repub election fraud, wherever they can get away with it. What is more disturbing is people like McCormack, Democrats who are shills for Diebold--because I think they have sacrificed the voters and election integrity for careers in electronic voting and all the attendant perks.

The result is that we have a President and a Governor of California with whom the majority of the citizens disagree on just about everything; a Congress that is unresponsive to the will of the majority; and a democracy that is at death's door.

How can we fix this?

a) paper ballots/hand counts at the precinct level

or at the least

b) paper BALLOT (not "paper TRAIL") backup of all electronic voting machines, strict auditing (a 5% to 10% automatic recount), strict security (a long list of needs), and NO secret, proprietary programming code!

In general, we need to purge the Dem Party of electronic voting business corruption--county, state, federal--and BAN Bushite voting machine companies from our elections. Throw their machines into the Pacific Ocean (our "Boston Harbor"!). And start over.

47. P.S. What I am saying, my friends, is that Arnold Schwarzenegger, like
George Bush and the real President, Dick Cheney, do not have to worry about what the majority of the people think, because their rightwing buds have gotten control of our election systems, and of the actual mechansim of vote tabulation, and hold it as a "trade secret."

And we have one last chance to fix this: to restore our right to vote and recover our democracy. The power over election systems still resides at the state/local level, where ordinary people still have some say. Join your local election reform group--or form your own--and help fix this problem. It is of the utmost urgency.

And if you're wondering why the Dem Party is not screaming bloody murder about this, just check out the Beverly Hilton event.

74. True....and only a 51 % disapproval rating means they can win. That's
what Bush/Kerry hung on and even Bush/Gore. With the voting machines ANY vote this close with that kind of disapproval can be hacked. Just enough that it looks "close" and the Diebold, etc. kicks in.

I'm glad to see Californian's being disappointed with him...but it ain't over until it's over. And Maria Shriver still gets good ratings...

Can you imagine what Arnold's rating would be if he had to

At least Davis got the lights back on.

And Davis was correct in buying long-term energy contract

California lost $9 billion and Davis was right to sue these

76. yeah, agree, but the Austrian meat puppet...
...blew it even further, by openly embracing (AFTER the election, of course) the crackpot radical-right ideology spewed forth by Grover Norquist et al.:

--screw workers, be completely pro-business (remember Ah-nuld's attempt to get rid of the lunch hour?)

--treat government workers and unions as the enemy; move to strip them of benefits and pensions

--don't even THINK of raising taxes (on the wealthy; of course Ah-nuld has screwed the middle class and working poor w/fee increases).

Californians, give them credit, soon saw what a turd this guy was.

Ahnuld pointed the gun at himself by embracing a lot of these crackpot ideas. If he had been a little smarter, he could have done a lot of 'puke dirty work under the radar and gotten away w/it. As it transpired, he couldn't resist running around shooting off his mouth w/ an extremist agenda that was bound to piss off most Californians. What an idiot; whatever else his faults, I thought he was smarter than that. Fortunately, just another idiot 'puke who couldn't resist using his power to put forth a bunch of crap. We had the fourth largest economy in the world here, until Mr. Bush Jr. shut it down by turning off the electricity and their is a lot of money going though this state and local governments here. Example, for one accountant to do the state budget it would take him over twenty years to complete.
