Ohio justice scolded for drunk driving
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A panel of state appellate judges publicly reprimanded Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick on Wednesday, saying her drunken driving conviction violated the state's judicial code of conduct.
In a video shot by a patrol car camera, Resnick tells a police sergeant questioning her that "I did have something to drink." She repeatedly asks to be let go and mentions her rulings as a judge, saying, "My God, you know I decide all these cases in your favor. And my golly, look what you're doing to me."

1. I bet that makes the others with DUI convictions, lost DLs, lost insurance
lost jobs feel a whole lot better about the system.. She should have gotten the SAME treatment as ANY DUI driver..

4. And how laws like DUI are bullshit
Little and nothing to do with public saftey; everything to do with selective enforcement.

11. tell that to the lady that was kiiled by a drunk driver
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 06:10 PM by crankybubba
last friday night. I was at the scene and she and her family were truly innocent vicims. the drunk driver was more worried about losing his license than that he just killed someone.

unfortunatly some in power will do anyhting to get out of trouble.

13. Alright, at the risk of appearing unsympathetic; hey dead lady,
how are those DUI laws working for you?

Yes, drinking and driving can have very tragic consequences, you'll get no argument from me on that. And I don't want to hijack this thread other than to say DUI is another mis-applied draconian law that ostensibly is for public safety but in reality is more of a revenue generator or an "enforcement tool". (Which is cop-talk for "another excuse to pull you over and check you out especially if you are unfortunate enough to be not white") Not every crash involving alcohol was caused by alcohol and for every driver out there impaired with booze, there are dozens more impaired in other ways.

Having said that--and assuming from your account that the driver's intoxication actually caused the accident--the driver should be charged with negligent homicide or involuntary manslaughter at the very least.

5. I wonder how many defence lawyers ...
... whose clients are charged with DUI in future, will point to this 'legal precedent' and demand the same for their clients.

6. I was on a ride-along one night
this car rips past us easily going 80 (this was back in the double nickle days) weaving across lanes with no lights. Cop says "this is a 502 for sure" and lights him up. He goes an easy two minutes before pulling over and bounces off the guard rail in the process.

Cop comes back to the car, and we start to pull out. "What's the deal?" I asked.

"He'd blow a two-point-five, but he works at the city attorneys' office. There's nothing I can do except escort him to the next Denny's and make sure he gets some coffee".

7. According to the article this was a formal reprimand, which was
in addition to having her license suspended for six months.

Sounds like a pretty typical 1st offense DWI to me.
