First case of human to human Bird Flu reported.
Bird Flu Passed From Son to Father, W.H.O. Says

By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL
Published: June 23, 2006

An Indonesian man who died of H5N1 bird flu caught it from his 10-year-old son, the first laboratory-confirmed case of human-to-human transmission of the disease, according to a World Health Organization investigation of an unusual family cluster of bird-flu cases.

The investigators also found that the virus mutated slightly when the son had the disease, although not in any way that would allow it to pass more readily among people. Flu viruses like H5N1 mutate constantly, although most of the mutations are insignificant biologically; that appears to be have been the case in the Indonesian cluster.

4. Yup, it's all falling into place.
I'm starting to think we'll never see a mid-term election, let alone a presidential election in 08.

8. I agree....he's worked too hard and accumulated too much
power to just hand it all over to the next selected pResident of the US!

I've got a bad feel that 2004 was our last election.....and it was rigged like the the 2000 election!

10. We may be the only two that thinks this,
and sometimes i wish i hadn't thought of it. But as you say, he's got way to much invested to just walk away.

Besides, if the opposition party took over in 06 and actually had serious hearing about all the activity of the admin allot of people would go to jail.

Then if you put E-voting on top of that, well it appears to me they have covered all the bases.

I keep thinking/hopping that some very smart astute people would consider this option and bring it to the attention of the american people before it's to late. Even if this happened, i'm afraid only a few of us would listen.

6. Run! Run! vote GOP! Run! Run!
Don't forget the earthquake in California! That's coming to kill us too!

I mean this is getting silly - what next "Look out! Here comes the Glacier!"? Or how about an Asteroid story. Haven't had one of those in a while.

this whole Panic now news cycle reminds me of this bit o' doggerel:

"When in trouble when in doubt,
Run in circles, scream and shout!"

9. What a clever...
CON.

Apparently what makes this confirmed is that the virus supposedly mutated in the child meaning if the father had the same mutated virus then he caught it off his son. Of course no mention of the possibility that it mutated in the bird they both caught it off...

So to believe their version - one family member caught it at work where she was around poultry. Then they had a banquet where that family member passed it on to the rest of the family - except the father of the chikd who instead caught it from the child after it mutated in the child.

Plausible I suppose. Of course also plausible is that the phrase "no known direct contact with sick birds" does not mean that they did not have multiple direct contatcs with sick bird - it just means they didn't KNOW it.

If you were walking through a park, sat on a bench, played "throw the stick" with a friendly dog etc etc - would you necessarily notice every piece of bird feces you might have come in contact with? Would you remember that days or weeks later while you or your family was dying?

Too damn convenient.

11. So you think the World Health Organization is in league with Bush, do you?
Damn, that was fast work by Bolton - to turn the United Nations from people who think Bush is an obstacle to world peace and prosperity to willing lackeys for his election plans? (This is aimed at both you and the others who think this is related to mid term elections).

The point is that 2 members of the family had the strain with the same mutation, while others had the original strain. The chances of the same mutation happening in two seperate hosts (whether bird or human) that close together are very, very small. It's much more likely that the mutation happened in the son, became the dominant version in him, and then he passed it to his father - so they have the same strain while others don't.

14. This is old news
It looks like there was human to human to human in this cluster and it has been known for weeks. The index case is assumed to have caught it from a bird but there is no proof as no birds in the vicinity came up positive.. She then passed it on to family. The spacing of infection in the family is indicative of human to human and then human again.
Not the first time it has happened.. just that they could not pass it off as just bird to human this time.

17. I agree, this is potentially very serious
I'm not saying it hasn't been hyped and used but whther or not the actual health risk is there I'm afraid of how our Gov. may act to "preemptively" stop the pandemic.

20. There is a cure for bird flu
It's a proven fact that kimchi and sauerkraut cure bird flu. What's irritating is that the WHO should know this and do something.
