US army denies killing sisters (Iraq)
THE US-led coalition ruling Iraq today strongly denied a report that American troops had killed two young Iraqi sisters near Baqubah, 60km north of Baghdad.

"US forces had nothing to do with the death of either of the young women. Both incidents appear to be murder. Iraqi police in the area are investigating," said a Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman.

The girls were found dead by the US army and Iraqi police, he said.

"US forces, in pursuit of two men who had been digging a hole in a field north of Baqubah, found a young girl, already dead. The men may have been preparing to bury the girl. Later the same day, Iraqi police and US forces found the remains of a second young girl.

"US forces assisted in the delivery of both bodies to the Baqubah General Hospital Morgue," he said.

A man said earlier that US troops at Ibn Firnas airport, seven kilometres from Baqubah, shot his sisters Fatima and Azra, 15 and 12, at midday yesterday (local time) as they were collecting wood from a field some 30 metres away.

5. There was a quote from a US soldier in a story this morning, he said
(paraphrasing) that he was about to be rotated out and was disappointed he hasn't had a chance to kill an Iraqi and do his part for the war.

I am not making this up.

Retracted News Stories, Hidden Body Bags, and a Deaf Ear for Experienced Soldiers: No Wonder Morale is Down in Iraq

by Monika Jensen-Stevenson

The week began with horrific reports that two American soldiers had been murdered in Mosul, Northern Iraq, their throats slit and their bodies mutilated. Across North America, the reaction was outrage. "IRAQI INGRATES CURSE US, Show no sympathy for butchered GIs," said the New York Post. Days later, U.S. military officials retracted the story. The two in fact died of gunshot wounds during a robbery. They were not mutilated.

9. Al Jazeera did not retract the story, it merely added the US version
However, the brother of the girls had earlier said that US troops at Ibn Firnas airport, 7km (4 miles) from Baquba, shot Fatima and Azra, 15 and 12, on Thursday at midday as they were collecting wood from a field some 30m away.

"Azra died on the spot and my other sister later died from her wounds," said 18-year-old Qusay.

Policeman Hussein Ali said US forces handed one of the girls' bodies over to the police "arguing that she had a gun in her possession."

Police searched the girls' home, "without finding anything illegal," Ali added.

10. "Both incidents appear to be murder"? Suspicious wording for one event.

11. I just don't buy the revision of the event.
This is consistent with other killings by US soldiers and subsequent denials. The fact that this latest news comes from a Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman that was not anywhere near the scene makes it suspicious. A lame attempt to change the scenario. They were compelled to come up with another story since this was more jarring than other reported killings. Innocent teenage girls supposedly with a gun gathering wood, but someone else killed them. I don't think so.
